Voyages en Orient – XIXth Century
This website serves as a guide to navigate the journal of Countess Elise de Perthuis as she ventures to the orient during the nineteenth century.
We aim to exhibit the travels of Countess Elise de Perthuis in an interactive storymap. This an attempt to build a visual representation tracking the route followed by the countess and her companions from 1853 when she left Paris, through her time in Beirut, her pilgrimage journey, her travel to Egypt and finally her way back to France through Eastern Europe.
This manuscript was found by Franco-Lebanese
Fouad Debbas in a bookshop in Lyon.
The manuscript is preserved today at the
Museum of Sursock in Beirut. Unfortunately, it is not yet digitized. It was displayed to the public for the first time during a photo exhibition in 2016 “Regards sur Beyrouth: 160 ans d’images 1800-1960“.
Also, this manuscript was fully transcribed and published in a book:
Tueini, G., ed. (2007), Voyages en Orient: Journal de la Comtesse de Perthuis: manuscrit inedit decouvert par Fouad Debbas. Beyrouth: Dar Annahar.
